On September 4th, the HK Phil kicked off its 42nd season with a programme of contrasting genres. Music director Jaap van Zweden sat out the opening night and ceded the stage to Chinese composer-conductor Tan Dun. The latter is best known for his Oscar-winning score for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, as well as his involvement in the jaw-dropping 2008 Beijing Olympics opening ceremony. A heavyweight in the classical music world and a cultural ambassador for New China, Tan is a superb choice to inaugurate the new season.
